50 Armed Men Patrol New Bern, Thieves Strike Where They Were Not; Costello, Evans, Bruno Arrested for Vagrancy, Jan. 3, 1921

Arrest Four After New Bern Robberies. . . White Men Taken During Patrol of City’s Streets

New Bern, Jan. 2—After patrolling the streets all Saturday night with a force of 50 armed men, citizens, police officers and deputies, in an effort to capture burglars who have been operating here for the past two weeks, Chief of Police A.L. Bryan yesterday arrested four white men who have been wintering here with two palmists. The city and cunty officers were on the alert last night for three other men who have been with the gang.

Three of the quartet were arrested in Bridgeton in the tent of one of the palmists. They gave their names as John Costello, age 17; “Wonder” Evans, age 20; and “Edison” Evans, age 35. The fourth who was arrested in New Bern, gave his name as Walter Bruno, age 25. All four gave their home as Chicago. They were remanded to jail to be given a hearing today on charge of vagrancy.

In spite of the thorough patrolling that was carried on Saturday night a number of burglaries in different sections of the city were attempted. A fruit store on lower Middle street was entered through a shattered plate window, but the raiders got nothing. Occupants of a private residence on Broad street returned home at 9 o’clock Saturday night and found boards placed against several windows, apparently placed for use later in the night in gaining entrance.

It has been a noticeable fact that the burglars have devoted their attention to money, passing up a number of cases of valuable watches and jewelry. The total loss in cash from 28 homes has approximated a thousand dollars.
