Nearly 800 acres of forest land on Forge mountain, at the head of Boylston creek, five miles west of Horse Shoe, were badly damaged by forest fires which originated Thursday and were not extinguished until after 12 hours of hard fighting on the part of fire wardens and citizens of the section. Of the damage 200 acres was on the Pisgah national forest preserve.
The fact that many people living in the section are ill with influenza retarded the work of organizing the countryside in combating the flames.
The fire got its start from an unidentified cause, and driven by strong winds, made rapid progress, covering fully 600 acres and then crossed into the government boundary. The extent of the damage has not been determined, though the fire is one of the largest reported in the section during the spring fire season.
