Local Oysters Selling for 75 Cents to $1 Per Bushel, Dec. 12, 1922

Elizabeth City Now Eating Many Oysters

Elizabeth City is gorging itself with oysters from North Carolina’s own oyster beds. More oysters are now being eaten in Elizabeth City than in many a year. Boatload after boatload from the famous Oregon Inlet and Crab Slough beds are coming to town, and they are being sold at 75 cents to a dollar a bushel.

The oysters too are unusually good this winter. They fattened on the fresh water that flooded the sounds in the summer, and growing near the inlets, they absorbed the tang of the sea from the incoming tides. And they are more plentiful than was expected by the oystermen when they first scraped the beds this season. Suppression of oystering and planting of beds by the state has given them a chance to grow.
