Mayor Francis Liles representing the town of Lilesville sent his check for $50 Saturday morning to help alleviate the distress of the homeless victims of that fire stricken city of New Bern.
Lilesville is going to experience a considerable boom. Material is being placed on the lot near the J.A. McAlister building for the erection of a modern up-to-date town hall. The house will be 60 by 25 feet, two stories high and will be divided into four departments with a glass front. The contract was awarded to John P. Little and son of Charlotte. A large force of hands are now at work on this building.
Mr. J.A. Atkinson, the very efficient manager of the farmers store in Lilesville, has awarded the contract to Mr. Alex Hutchinson for the erection of a nice six-room residence in Lilesville.
Mr. Short is building a cottage in Lilesville and will move into it as soon as completed. A new industry forgetting out ballast has a large force of hands at work below Lilesville on the S A L.
The people are waking up to the importance of the smaller industries and to the fact that our own endeavor is a powerful factor in developing our material resources.
The first quarterly conference for Lilesville circuit for the current year will be held in Lilesville next Sunday the 17th. It is desired that every church be represented.
Christmas will soon be here and the boys with their fire crackers. Rubbish heaps are fire breeders. Fires start in them and are fed by them. A clean town will have few fires. The people must be made to know that our annual fire waste is as great a menace as war, famine or flood. Fire waste emanates largely from criminal indifference, hence should be prevented through laws which would go direct to the very root of the evil and hold the party on whose premises fire originates criminally liable. When this is done our fire waste and sacrifice of human life will be reduced 75 per cent.
Rev. Geo. Sinclair and wife of Georgia arrived here today enroute to Norfolk. He is with the Alexander Lumber Co., of Georgia.
Mr. Ben Clark of Georgia is visiting his brother, Mr. Hill Clark of Lilesville.
