Tents Impracticable; Will Build Barrack-Type Homes, Dec. 8, 1922

Tents Are Impracticable; Will Build Houses Here

Realizing the impracticability of erecting tents on a large scale to accommodate the homeless citizens of New Bern, the housing committee, together with a special committee appointed last night, today is busily engaged in securing sites and drawing up plans for wooden structures of a semi-permanent nature, and it is hoped to erect them at once.

T.G. Hyman, chairman, said that about a score of tents probably would be erected on the property of the Stewart Sanitarium, but that these would be for purely temporary purposes. The plan for rehabilitation, as outlined by him and approved by the committee, is to build wooden structure somewhat in the nature of barracks buildings, each of which would be divided into sections and would accommodate nine families. It is hoped to have plans for these buildings completed immediately and to start construction work in a few days.
