Betts Family Loses Home to Fire, March 8, 1923

House in West Asheboro Burned

The fire alarm sounded Tuesday night about 11 o’clock announcing the burning of the house in which Mr. Walter Betts lived. When the fire was discovered it was so far advanced that it was impossible for the fire company to save any part of the building. The house was one of the bungalows which Mr. L.D. Wagger built during last year and was modern and complete. Mr. Betts has occupied the house ever since it was completed. A heavy rain was falling at the time the fire was announced and it was hoped that this would stay the flames until the fire company could reach the scene. Mr. and Mrs. Betts lost practically all of their furniture and clothing. They had no insurance. The bungalow cost $2,900 and there was $1,500 insurance. Fire originated from a defective flue.

From the front page of The Courier, Asheboro, N.C., published Thursday, March 8, 1923. Yes, the article stated that there was no insurance and in the next sentence stated that there was $1,500 insurance.
