Charlotte, N.C., March 10—A coroner’s jury Saturday night returned a verdict that J.D. Davis, an alleged rum runner who was shot to death by Rural Policeman Johnston here early Saturday morning, was killed by the officer in discharge of his duty and that the homicide was “justifiable.”
Davis and Oscar Bridges were the occupants of an automobile for which the officers had a search warrant, suspecting that liquor was being transported. After an all-night search the car was located early Saturday, and a chase through the streets of Charlotte, in which the fleeing men fired three times on the officers, resulted. Davis was shot by Officer Johnston after he left the automobile and tried to escape on foot.
