Magic Catfish Spits Out Dimes, June 15, 1923

Cat Fish Makes Attempt at Being Currency Mint. . . Here Is the Latest Fish Yarn from Down the Kinston Way

Kinston, June 13—The best fish st rooyf (???story in) a season prolific of good ones came to light here today. James A. Powers, sixth district solicitor, was responsible for the yarn getting into print. Investigation proved that it was true beyond a shade of doubt.

Two youngsters fishing in a small stream hooked a cat fish. “Flirting about on the bank,” the fish spilled 30 cents in shiny times from its mouth. The freckled anglers had heard something about a Bible character being told to “go catch fish and pay his taxes.” For that reason they were overwhelmed with awe. They hastened home with the fish and the three times. Their father said lying was an unpardonable sin, and that he would flail them into repentance.

“But wait a minute,” he said. “I’ll give you a chance. If that fish is such a mint as you say it is, there’s more money in it. I don’t expect to find a cent, but I’m going to be fair with you.”

Father slashed the cat fish open and another dime rolled out. The reputations of the anglers were saved. They “felt better all around,” as the result of the old gentleman’s discovery.
