Lumberton, July 21—Attorney W.S. Britt, who made his closing speech for the defense this afternoon, was the target of serious threats less than 30 minutes after he closed his argument. Mrs. Hattie Purvis, the star prosecuting witness in the flogging case shaking her finger at him and saying: “I’m going to get you.”
Just as she uttered the threat, Lawson Purvis, her brother-in-law who was standing beside her said: “Yes, she’s going to get you, and I’m going to help her.”
During the attorney’s speech Mrs. Purvis seemed to become very much heated over his remarks to the jury. Mr. Britt surprised eye-witnesses by laughing over the matter and did not let his anger be shown. His brother and law partner, E.M. Britt, who was a close range and who heard the threat, stated to the threatening parties that it as the opportune time to get somebody.
No warrants have been issued and Mr. Britt is taking the matter very unconcernedly.
