On last Friday night at the Garner school, about four miles from town, the ladies of the school gave a box party. A large crowd of people gathered there, and from what we can learn, corn liquor was in evidence in every direction.
A man by the name of Gibson began swearing in the school room and Mr. L. T. Garner of Weldon politely asked him not to swear in the presence of ladies, and without another word, Gibson drew a pocket knife and slashed Mr. Garner across the throat. It took 19 stitches to close the wound. The physician said if the wound had been an eighth of an inch deeper, it would have been fatal.
Mr. Garner is doing well and will soon be himself again.
