As a result of a deluge of lima beans from the farms of the Eastern Shore of Virginia and Mary land on the New York markets this week, growers in this section received unexpected low prices for their consignments of truck peas for the time of year. Truck peas went down to $2.50 a basket when they seldom go below $5 at this season.
This explanation was made by C.D. Byrd, representative of Jill Bros. of New York, who was here with Brock & Scott Produce Company this week. Mr. Boyd stated that more than 15,000 baskets of lima beans went on the New York markets one day. The lima beans sold much cheaper than truck peas, and the result was a serious drop in the market. Now that lima bean shipments are about over, he anticipates better prices on peas.
