Mrs. Griggs Ends Her Service Here. . . Her Resignation Was Effective Saturday—Miss Crawford Succeeds Here

Saturday night when the doors of the Durham public library were closed after the day’s work, Mrs. Alfred Griggs, for a number of years librarian, severed her connection with the institution and on January 1st she will enter in upon her new duties as secretary and director of the North Carolina library commission. Her new position will take her away from Durham, and Raleigh will be her headquarters.

Miss Clara Crawford, simultaneously with the close of the library for the day’s business, took over the duties of librarian. She has had much valuable experience under the leadership of Mrs. Griggs and is an excellent successor to the retiring librarian. When interviewed Saturday, Miss Crawford stated that the work of Mrs. Griggs would be carried forward with much thought being given to the extension service for the county.

Mrs. Griggs will remain in Durham until the first of January. During that time she is here she will be entertained at a number of social functions.

An interesting coincident in connection with Mrs. Griggs’ 12 years residence in Durham is the fact that Miss Crawford, in June 1911, was returning home from Converse college, and came down on the same train from Greensboro, on which Mrs. Griggs was passenger coming to Durham that year to take up her library work. Miss Crawford was the first Durhamite to meet Mrs. Griggs. Now she succeeds her in library work.
