Sign Language at A.H. Stockard's Funeral, Jan. 20, 1924

A.H. Stockard dead

Burlington, Jan. 19--Albert H. Stockard, aged 50 years, a deaf mute, died at his home in this city Thursday morning at 7:45 o’clock, following a brief illness of pneumonia.

Mr. Stockard had been in the employ of Aurora Cotton mills a long time and was most faithful and esteemed highly by his fellow workers and employees. The funeral service was held at the residence yesterday morning at 11 o’clock by Rev. Thomas F. Opie, who was assisted by Rev. R.C. Fortune a deaf minister of Durham, who gave the service in the sign language for the benefit of the mutes present. The songs were rendered in the sign language by a deaf mute friend, and the pallbearers and flower bearers were also deaf mutes. The remains were taken to Saxapahaw, his old home, for interment.

He is survived by his wife and two children and an aged mother, Mrs. Joe Stockard.
