Wrecking Tugboat Working to Free Steamship Springfield Stuck on Cape Fear Sandbar, Jan. 13, 1924

Wrecking Tug Has Brought in Boat

By the Associated Press

Wilmington, N.C., Jan. 12—The Merritt Wrecking Company tug I.J. Merritt, ordered to Cape Fear bar from Norfolk on request of the United States shipping board, owners of the steamship Springfield, which grounded just inside the bar Friday at 10 a.m. when her steering gear gave way, passed a hawser to the Springfield at noon today but was unable to release the ship. Its efforts were made at high tide. All afternoon the tugs working crews have been getting out anchors with hawsers attached which will be wounded around the capstans of the Springfield and at next flood tide the tug will pull and the Springfield will warm in the anchor hawsers, and between the two, it is hoped that the vessel will move into deeper water.
