Hatteras Island Again Searching for Doctor, Feb. 15, 1924

Doctor Is Wanted to Serve Hatteras People

Hatteras Island wants a doctor and is willing to guarantee $3,000 per annum if one will take the job, according to Miss Maud O’Neal, postmistress, and all round boss of the works down there, says a Raleigh newspaper correspondent.

Hatteras is the nearest point of land to the Atlantic coast and the farthest from the island. Somewhat like Ocracoke, it doesn’t boast any lawyer, magistrates, or other enforcement officials. Whatever troubles arise in the community, Miss O’Neal and some of the older citizens settle them.

The government is willing to pay the doctor $800 to look after the health of the coast guard down there. The community can be made to pay around $5,000, for there are nearly 2,000 inhabitants within a radius of 15 miles.

Judging from the above, it is evident that Miss Blanch Elper, the lady doctor from Kalamazoo, has become tired of Hatteras and plans to vacate. Miss Elper has been to Hatteras about a year.
