Selma Tarkington, Head Women's Department, Chesson Store, Feb. 15, 1924

A Girl Who Had to Make Good

MISS SELMA TARKINGTON

A wistful, awkward, bashful little girl applied at the store of E.S. Chesson Co. for a position a few years ago. She said she was from Washington County. “I don’t need any extra help,” said Mr. Chesson, “but if you say you’re from Washington County I’ll give you a week’s work. At the end of the week I’ll either raise your wages or let you go.” At the end of the week Mr. Chesson raised her wages. Here is a picture of the girl. Miss Tarkington is to-day head of the woman’s department of the Chesson store and is in New York this week doing the spring buying for t5he firm. Zoeller photo.
