Robeson County Commencement for Indian Public Schools Will be Held March 28, 1924

County Commencement for Indian Public Schools. . . All Indian Schools in Robeson Will Take Part, and Scotland and Sampson Counties Will be Represented. . . At Pembroke March 28. . . Day’s Exercises Will Begin with Grand Parade—Numerous Prizes Are Offered

Pembroke, March 8—A county commencement for Indian public schools will be held at the Indian Normal school, Pembroke, on February, March 28th. Scotland and Sampson counties will also be represented.

The day’s exercises will begin with a grand parade under the directions of J.R. Lowrey, parade manager. The line-up of schools in the parade will be according to group centres, each group center having its float.

The group centers of the county, with schools in each group, are as follows:

Pembroke: Pembroke graded, Harpers Ferry, Deep Branch, Excelsior, New Hope, Bee Branch.

Old Prospect: Prospect, White Hill, Oxendine, Wakusla, Turn-Out, White Oake, Zion.

Hopewell: Hopewell, John Dial, Hickory Hill.

Green Grove: Green Grove, Piney Grove, Fairmont, Henderson, Mahoney, Dogwood, Glenwood, Jacob Swamp Rowland.

Piney Grove (in Saddletree): Piney Grove, Magnolia, Antioch, Blue School, Allenton, New Point.

Laurel Institute: Laurel Institute, Burnt Swamp, Rennert, Bethel Hill, Nicholas.

The schools will assemble after the parade on Normal school grounds, where the following program will be carried out:

Songs by the various schools.

Address by Senator L.R. Varser.

State Superintendent A.T. Allen of Raleigh is also expected to be present and make an address.

Dinner hour.

Recitation contest, not over 7 minutes each.

Singing contest, one song each.

Declamation contest, not over 7 minutes each.

Spelling contest, fourth grade only, written.

Athletic contest.

There will be an exhibit of work done at the various schools in one of the Normal class rooms.

The following prizes will be awarded:

$10 to school having best orderly appearance in the parade, given by W.M. Lowry.

$5 to school having second best appearance in parade, given by the McCormick Company.

$10 to school with best percentage of attendance in parade, given by Pates Supply Co.

$5 to school with second best percentage of attendance in parade, given by A.M. Breece.

$5 to school with best choir, given by Pembroke Drug Co.

$2 to school with second best choir, given by C.E. McDaniel.

$5 to school with best exhibit by Cole Hardware Co.

$2 to school with next best exhibit, by Paul Brothers.

$5 for best declamation, given by Frank Lowry.

$5 for best recitation, given by W.H. Sampson.

$2 for next best declamation, by H.H. Godwin.

$5 given by C.O. Cater, $1 by J.C. Oxdine, and $1 by S.J. Chavis, to be given as prizes to contestants in athletics.

the Athletic contests will be as follows: 50-yard dash by boys; baseball throw, girls and boys; three-legged race, boys; tow-bag race, boys; potato race, boys and girls; broad jump, boys; peanut race, girls. Each school will be entitled to one contestant in each contest.
