Isom Races Away from Police, But They Capture Him at Bridge, May 21, 1924

Race Saturday Afternoon Between Officers and the Pursued from Wilkesboro to Mountains

Paymaster Isom, or who had been paymaster of the water contracting company in Wilkesboro, gave the officers a chase Saturday afternoon from Wilkesboro out the Taylorsville road to the foot of the mountain, Kilby’s Gap, where (he) headed off on a bridge. For a few miles of the 10, it was an even race that started in or east of town, both the pursued and the pursuers driving Fords. The officers swapped cars with some man on the road, getting a Chevrolet and Ev. Jarvis driving for Policeman Lenderman got in front of Isom and ahead for some distance and shut up the bridge with the Chevrolet car. Thus ended the race.

After Isom had been arraigned, Ernest Wood, colored, was arraigned in connection with violation of the liquor laws. The pay roll amount was said to be $25.

Better let “the elixir” alone, boys.
