Thomas Byrd Dies of Burns in Sedge Fire, May 21, 1924

Mr. Thomas Byrd of Edwards Dies from Burns in a Sedge Fire

Mr. Thomas Byrd of Roaring River died here at the hospital last Wednesday night from terrible burns received in a sedge fire nine days before.

Mr. Byrd has an older brother in West Wilkesboro, Mr. J.R. Byrd, and was youngest of his father’s family; his former home being in Edwards township, but was at t6his time living with his son-in-law, Mr. Grover Caudill, and was near 73 years of age. He leaves a wife and four children.

He and his son-in-law had set a fire a field of sedge broom and the wind rose. In some way the fire surrounded him, suffocated and burned him terrible on the arms and face so badly that he lingered and died. The funeral was at Pleasant Home last Friday.
