Willis T. Saunders, 70, Arrested for Attempting to Assault 11-Year-Old Girl, May 20, 1924

Serious Charge for Watchman. . . Willis T. Saunders Arrested by Police; Detained at Police Quarters Pending an Investigation

Willis T. Saunders, 70-year-old white man, was placed under arrest this morning by Officers Pearce and Curley on a charge of attempted criminal assault on an 11-year-old girl. He is being detained at police headquarters pending an investigation not his sanity. It is said that he is demented.

Saunders, according to the statement of the young girl, enticed her into the watchman’s box at the Norfolk-Southern tracks on Goldsboro street. Saunders is the watchman at the crossing. He threatened to beat her, it is said, provided she failed to comply with his wishes.

The girl, frightened by the man’s threat, entered the “box” where she was found in a compromising position by the officers, who immediately placed Saunders under arrest. An examination of the girl showed that she had not been injured.

If Saunders is pronounced mentally unbalanced he will be interned at a state institution. If not, he will probably stand on the charge on which he was arrested.
