Elizabeth City, July 11—Under an ordinance just passed by the City Council, cows will no longer be allowed in this city after December 31st next. The ban was put on hogs some time ago. In taking this action the council with the mayor announced that the growth of the city made it difficult for cows to be kept on residential or other nearby premises in a complete sanitary condition and that in order to protect the health of the inhabitants, they deemed it best to put the cows outside the city limits.
Dairies which once were numerous in the city were put outside the corporate limits during the World War and only one cow permitted to each family. Later the law was amended to permit two cows to be kept on the premises of a resident. As a result, numerous two-cow dairies sprung up all over the city. Their rapid growth along with the health demands of the city, it was said, caused the council to make the latest restrictions.
