Boy Killed When He Ran in Front of Bus, Dec. 11, 1924

Neville Boy Killed. . . Struck by a Bus on the Chapel Hill-Durham Highway

Bynum Neville, son of Claude Nevill, was instantly killed when he was struck by a bus last Thursday night about a mile from town on the Chapel Hill-Durham highway. The driver, Julius Pickett, was released on bail and will appear later in the Superior court for trial.

Witnesses of the accident say that young Neville was one of several boys who were playing with fire crackers on the road between 9 and 10 o’clock. When the bus approached, going toward Durham, he was standing away from the pavement on the south (right) side of the road, and the driver thought he was going to stay there. But he darted toward the other side, and the heavy vehicle struck him and hurled him several yards. Jack Sparrow, who lives nearby and saw him struck, ran to him and found him dead. The opinion of everybody who was near at the time seems to be that the driver was not at fault.

From page 4 of The Chapel Hill Weekly, Thursday, Dec. 11, 1924. Victim’s last name spelled “Neville” and his father’s last name spelled “Nevill” in paper.
