Loan Sharks Charge Up to 480% Interest, Sept. 24, 1925

Rocky Mount Telegram, telling of an organization there of a band of men determined to break up the sinful practice of robbing an unfortunate by lending money at ruinous rates of interest, says that in some instances as high as 480 per cent has been charged. An action against three defendants set forth that the plaintiff borrowed from them $48 and paid $80 in interest in addition to the principal. Men who wring from the misfortunes of people their hard-earned dollars by such means are infinitely worse than highway robbers or burglars.

Burglars and highway robbers at least have courage of a sort, and daring, which cannot be said of the slimy reptiles who fatten by such means as the loan sharks use.
