Col. J.T. Gardner, Shelby Mayor for 26 Years, Died While Visiting in Forest City, Oct. 15, 1925

Col. J.T. Gardner Dies Suddenly at Forest City. . . One of Cleveland County’s Most prominent Citizens and Widely Known Over the State

Colonel J.T. Gardner, brother of O. Max Gardner and brother-in-law of Clyde Hoey of Shelby, died suddenly at the home of Mrs. Sue Biggerstaff, where he and his wife were visiting, at 9:30 o’clock last Friday night.

It is understood that Colonel Gardner, who was preparing to retire, stumbled suddenly and fell to the floor, expiring almost immediately. His death is attributed to high blood pressure. He was 64 years of age.

The funeral was held from the home in Shelby Sunday afternoon.

Colonel Gardner was major of Shelby 13 times, serving a total of 26 years in this capacity. He was for many years connected with the military establishment of North Carolina. He was captain of a North Carolina company during the Spanish-American war and was colonel of the First North Carolina regiment following the war.

Colonel Gardner was a son of Dr. O.P. Gardner.

He is survived by is wife, who was Miss Texie Nooe of Mecklenburg County, and five children, Talmage and Louis Gardner of Shelby, Dr. John Gardner of Texas; Mrs. Helen Carrick of Florida and Mrs. Graham Norrison of Lincoln County.

He is also survived by the following brothers and sisters:

O. Max Gardner of Shelby; Pat Gardner of Gastonia; Will Gardner; Mrs. J.J. McMurry, Mrs. Clyde Hoey, and Mrs. J.A. Anthony of Shelby; Mrs. Cleo Robinson of New York and Mrs. Addie Farthing of Charlotte.
