Harness Companies Going Out of Business, Sept. 30, 1926

Another Defeat for Old Dobbin. . . Big Harness Company Gives Up Ghost in Wake of Rock Hill Buggy Factory

An editorial from The Charlotte Observer, recently reprinted in these columns, mourned the passing of the Rock Hill Buggy Company, which was sold under the hammer to satisfy creditors. That company and the Tyson and Jones Buggy Company of Carthage, were among the leading buggy manufacturers of the country before the automobile pushed horse-drawn vehicles off the road. The Rock Hill company tried to manufacture automobiles, but failed. The Tyson and Jones plant, however, took up the manufacture of furniture and truck bodies, and is doing well.

Now the papers are relating of another defeat for Old Dobbin and the one-horse shay. The Perkins-Campbell Company of Cincinnati, Ohio, one of the largest concerns in the United States manufacturing harness, saddles and accoutrement of the horse and buggy era, is quitting the business.

Large harness showrooms in New York and Chicago already have been closed, according to officials, and the harness departments of their huge plant there are being sold or leased for other types of business, effective in October.

The corporation will turn its $250,000 capital to the manufacture of leather specialties peculiar to the modern age and the automobile.

“Only in the west does a demand for harness and saddles remain sufficient to justify their manufacture,” declared Milton D. Campbell, vice president of the company, “and the harness houses of Milwaukee, Chicago, St. Louis and Kansas have the technical advantages of lesser freight rates to distribution points. Hence we are not needed in that field.”

The Perkins-Campbell Company was established in 1879 by henry A. Perkins and Braxton W. Campbell. It is now owned entirely by the Campbell family.
