1,500 Men Out of Work as Champion Fibre Mills Close in Canton, March 13, 1921

Asheville, March 12—Preparations are under way for the closing down early next week of the great Champion Fibre Company Mills, Canton, near here, the largest manufacturers of paper in the South. Following the depression last fall the big mills closed but various department shave opened form time to time, although the decision to close which it is understood has just been made, would shut down all departments, throwing out of employment 1,500 men. This action is being taken, it is stated, owing to a lack of orders from the finishing mills at Hamilton, Ohio, controlled by the company owning the Canton mills.
