Burt Slate, Ed Watson Can Break Out of Jail But Can't Stay Out, Dec. 8, 1921

Jail Break

Burt Slate and Ed Watson, two young white men, on Wednesday were bound over to Dobson court under heavy bond for numbers of offenses the most of which were store breaking and jail delivering. Both these parties were originally arrested for breaking in the store of Roberson Bros. at White Plains last summer. They were placed in the city jail where they made their escape by prying the cell up from the floor and crawling out from under it.

Chief Lawrence was able to arrest them again last Saturday and thought he had them securely confined this time but when he went to feed them their breakfast Monday morning they were gone. This time they secured a saw in some way and had cut a hole in the cell, and later broke two doors off their hinges in getting out of the city hall. Tuesday morning, they were apprehended at Galax on their way to the coal fields. Chief Lawrence had them back in their cells Tuesday night and they were given a hearing Wednesday with the result that they must answer to felony charges at Dobson in February.
