McNeill and Merritt Face Charges of Kidnapping, June 10, 1923

Interesting Case Will Be Disposed Of in Carteret County. . . Trial of Alleged Kidnappers Comes Up at Beaufort This Week

M. Lucien McNeill of Greenville, S.C., and J.B. Merritt, an ex-serviceman whose home is at Salisbury, are scheduled to go on trial at Beaufort Monday morning before Judge Henry A. Grady, on a charge of attempting to kidnap Frank Thomas and Charles R. Thomas III, sons of Charles R. Thomas Jr. of Chicago, Ill., at Beaufort several days ago. McNeill and Merritt are now at liberty under bonds of $5,000 and $2,500 respectively.

A suit which took place at Wilmington last September between Mrs. M.K. McNeill of Greenville, S.C., the grandmother of the two lads and a Mrs. Geoffrey, head of St. Paul’s school at Beaufort, resulted in the awarding of the boys to Mrs. Geoffrey’s care. It is said that the attempted abduction grew out of the plan of the grandmother to get possession of the boys.

The case has attracted much interest in Eastern Carolina and the outcome is being awaited with much speculation.
