There's a Single Standard for Sin, Warns Evangelist Billy Sunday, Jan. 7, 1924

Single Standard for Sexes, Sunday Topic. . . Wife Has as Much Right to Get Drunk as Her Liege Lord, Says Evangelist

Charlotte, Jan. 2—Despite rain the Billy Sunday tabernacle was filled this afternoon and evening. Afternoon theme “Casting Out Devils.”

“There’s no one in having this meeting,” said Mr. Sunday, “unless we cast out devils. What’s the use of a hospital if nobody is cured of disease? What’s the use of packing this house to the roof day by day if nothing happens that will make the recording angel sit up and take notice?

“The disciples had a big crowd drawn by curiosity but no devils were being cast out. Some people think the Lord is not within 10 miles of the church unless it is packed to the roof.

“Some preachers are so crazy after sensations as the yellowest journal. You might find that in the reason the ministry is disgraced by a lot of as nonsensical claptrap as exists outside of the insane asylum.”

Other striking ideas were: “Nobody ever had a harder time than Jesus. I say it to the eternal disgrace of the human race—Nobody ever had a harder time than Jesus Christ.

“There is little hope for the fellow who thinks he is right and keeps right5 on until he stumbles over the cliff.

“Over in a shooting gallery in Butte, Montana, a friend of mine saw this sign: ‘If you can’t find out why you miss, you will never hit the bull’s eye.’

“If you haven’t got sense enough to know what made you fall you will never succeed.

“If you are a preacher, are your sermons so much hot air, or do they make Felixes and Agrippas that sit in the audience, squirm and trembly and cry out? No man rises higher than his motives.

”Peter on the mount said: Let’s build three tabernacles, let the crowd in the valley pulling hair, chewing the rag to see who’d sit in the highest seat.

“There is noting to show that God Almighty will do anything out of the common to help a fool. It is as impossible to pray right when your life is wrong as it is to run an automobile with dish water.

“God Himself marked out the same path for men and women and sin is sexless,” said Sunday tonight, flaying the double standard of morality. What is wrong for a woman to do is wrong for a man to do. The crying need of America today is the single standard for men and women.

A fallen man is truly as adulterer as a fallen woman is an adulteress. It makes no difference to God whether the one who sins wears a plug hat or hair pins, a coat or a petticoat. Sin is sexless. Many a man does the things he wouldn’t want his wife to do. He says, she’s my wife or she’s my sister or she’s my sweetheart, and yet your wife has just as good a right to sit around with a gang and fill her hide up with booze as you have, then stagger home vomiting and spewing as you have.

Just as good a right to sit around and spit out oaths as you have, but neither of you have.

Just as good a right to sit around and spit out oaths as you have, but neither of you have. Just such a dialogue has been going on between the sexes until Christ came and changed it.

“Men demand of a woman that she retain her original place of purity where God put her, but he has cut for himself a niche below where God Amighty placed him, and she leans over the parapet battlements of her alabaster purity and says to her liege lord, where are you going?

“None of your darn business.

“A fountain of purity for woman, a hog wallow for men! Such a doctrine crawled out of the pit of hell.”
