Milton Eason, 50, Choked to Death When Cart Overturns, Feb. 8, 1924

Choked to Death When Cart Upsets. . . Sad Accident Happened to Farmer Who Left Home Before Daylight with Load of Hogs

Pinned to the earth by an overturned cart, Milton Eason, 50-year-old farmer of Newland Township, choked to death in the mud in the early hours of Tuesday morning. No one knows exactly what caused the accident, but his lifeless body was found by two negroes at 5 o’clock in the morning, and it is supposed that his cart upset over an embankment thrown up by highway forces some 12 miles from Elizabeth City.

One version of the accident is that Mr. Eason left home long before daylight to bring three hogs to Elizabeth City to sell. His body was found near the bridge at the old Dr. Temple Millpond site, pinned to the ground, and dead, with the handrail of the cart across his throat. He held a lantern in one hand and this was pinned under his body. The horse was flat on his back, worn out from his efforts to free himself.

Mr. Eason was regarded as a thrifty and industrious farmer. He is survived by a wife and several children and a brother, Walter Eason of this city.
