Items of Local News

--Recorder-elect A.S. Thompson, who underwent an operation at the Thompson Hospital a few hours before the disastrous fire last Tuesday morning, was able to return to his home in Fairmont yesterday. His brother, Mr. C.B. Thompson, also of Fairmont, who underwent treatment at the Baker sanatorium for a few days, was also able to leave yesterday.

--Governor-elect A.W. McLean returned Friday from the Western part of the state, where he spent 10 days, visiting all the principal places of interest and places of natural beauty among the mountains. A picture appearing in yesterday’s News & Observer shows him with a number of friends viewing the wonderful scenery near Linville and Blowing Rock.

--Local fishermen and hunters seem to be having good luck during the fine weather. Several nice catches of fish were made last week and a local hunter brought in a deer.

--Little Miss Helen Marie and Master Justin McNeill spent the week-end in Parkton with their grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. C.D. Williamson.

--Born to Mr. and Mrs. D.D. French Thursday afternoon, a girl.

--There will be a meeting of the Epworth League in Chestnut Street Methodist church tonight at 7:30.

--The condition of Mr. J.P. Townsend, who underwent an operation at the Baker sanatorium Saturday, is improving.

--The cottage prayer meeting for Caldwell and Water streets will be held Tuesday morning at 10 o’clock at the home of Mr. and Mrs. O.O. Dukes.

--Mrs. S.M. Duncan of R. 3 from Lumberton was among the visitors in town Saturday and brought to The Robesonian office some fine turnips, which are appreciated.

--Among those from here attending some of the sessions of the Methodist conference in Wilmington last week were Mr. and Mrs. A.E. White, Messrs. Fred Gray, J.L. Stephens, K.M. Barnes, Ed Ranche and J.A. Sharpe.

--Fire Chief E.J. Glover received the following telegram Thursday from P.O. Herbert of Atlanta, Ga., manager of the Eureka Fire hose Co. and American LaFrance Fire Engine co.: “Regret big fire. Telegraph collect if we can serve you.”

--Mrs. M. McRae Faison and daughter, Miss Hilda, arrived last Wednesday from Roanoke Rapids. Mr. Faison, general manager of the State Land Development & Insurance company, arrived several weeks ago. They are living in the Lee dwelling on East Seventh street.

--License has been issued for the marriage of Miss Swannie Gardner to Mr. Alex Britt; Miss Bertha Mae Allen to Mr. Talmadge B. Clements; Miss Nannie Regan to Mr. John McVicker; Mrs. Lizzie J. Faircloth to Mr. W.E. Bailey; Mrs. Hettie Talton to Mr. Arthur West.

--Mr. Joe Sugar, a well-known merchant of St. Paul, had a narrow escape this morning when the left front wheel of his automobile ran off as he was coming to Lumberton. Fortunately Mr. Sugar escaped without injury and his automobile was not otherwise damaged.

--The condition of Mr. Dan Prevatte, who has been sick at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Haynes Prevatte Fourteenth and Pine, is somewhat improved. Mr. Prevatte had been conducting a business at Clarkton and was taken sick after exposure while fighting a fire that destroyed his building and its contents.

--Messrs. A.E. and J.E. bullock of Rocky Mount and Pittsburg, Pa., respectively, passed through here today en-route to Rocky Mount after spending some time in Proctorville with their parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.R. Bullock. They were accompanied here by their wives, who will remain in Proctorville with Mr. and Mrs. Bullock for several weeks.

--Dr. R.C. Beaman, former pastor of Chestnut Street Methodist church, who was returned to Tarboro by Bishop Denny at the last conference which closed last night, arrived here this morning from Wilmington and is a guest at the home of Mr. and Mrs. F.P. Gray, Cedar and Sixth streets. He will spend several days here at the homes of old friends.

--Rev. T. McM. Grant, pastor of Chestnut Street Methodist church, and Rev. N.L. Seabolt, pastor of Lumberton circuit, returned this morning from Wilmington, where they attended the Methodist conference. As was desired and expected, each was returned to his charge here for the second year, this being the second year of the second term Mr. Seabolt has served Lumberton circuit.
