Lumberton, Nov. 11—Twenty-six patients and 14 nurses had narrow escapes and the lives of some of the patients were saved only by heroic efforts on the part of some of the nurses when the Thompson hospital, a wooden structure, was completely destroyed by fire of undetermined origin early today. The loss, partly covered by insurance, was estimated at $40,000.
Three of the patients had undergone serious operations within nine hours of the fire. A number of them were carried from their rooms on the second floor to safety in the arms of nurses while the building was burning rapidly. Dr. T.C. Thompson, superintendent of the hospital, is said to have entered a number of the rooms as the burning wall and ceilings were fall in to make sure that all patients had been removed.
