Shelby, Sept. 4—From 3,609 people in 1920 to a population of 8,854 in 1925—that is the official history of the remarkable progress Shelby had made during recent years.
An official census, made by the department of commerce, completed here this afternoon, gives Shelby a population double that of 1920. Five years ago with over 1,500 people extra. Only five years ago there were just 8,409 people living in No. 6 township. Now more than that live in Shelby alone. The rapid growth of Shelby in the past five years more than doubling in population is characteristic of the wonderful advance being made in western North Carolina. The pace continues here and another doubling is expected by 1930.
