Anthony Carroll and Ellie Davis Try to Run Away Together, March 4, 1919

From the front page of The Wilson Times, March 4, 1919

Brought Back Here Last Night

Anthony Carroll and Mrs. Ellie Davis, who left here together Saturday afternoon for Raleigh on the westbound Norfolk Southern train, were brought back here last night and the man was placed in jail while the woman with her three-year-old child is with some of her people at Five Points in the suburbs of this city.

Officer Petway went to Raleigh after then and found that they had registered at a hotel in that city under the name of Mr. and Mrs. E.D. Morgan of Farmville, N.C. The case will be heard before Mayor Killett at 9 o’clock tomorrow morning and in the meantime the man as related above will remain in jail unless he gives a cash bond of $500 or a justified bond of $1,000.

The man in the case has been in this city and employed by Mr. J.W.W. Thompson since December. He wired the house of Mr. Davis during that month and it is supposed that the intimacy between the man and woman dates from that time. We learn that Mr. Davis will sue for divorce and seek to recover his child, a little girl which is now with its mother. The Davis’s live on Walnut street in the extreme Southern part of the city, while Carroll is a single man.
