Selica Graded School Closes 7-Month Session, Five Pupils Completing Seventh Grade Ready for High School, March 11, 1921

The Selica Graded School closed a seven-month session last Friday night with a public entertainment consisting of songs, recitations, drills and dialogues, presented by the pupils.

A large crowd attended the exercises. All the seats were filled and all the available standing room taken. In spite of the size of the audience, the order was of the best.

The students had been well prepared and entered into the different parts of the program with spirit. Their efforts were much enjoyed, as well as the music furnished between curtains by W.C. McCall with violin and J.M. Orr with banjo.

One of the most interesting parts of the program was a recitation and declamation contest, participate in by Ira Whitmire, Christine Whitmire, Clara Corn, Alice McCall and Homer Corn. These prizes had been offered by C.E. Ellenburg, principal of the school. In addition to these, H.N. Blake, a resident of the community had donated $5 to be distributed equally among the five contestants—so that no one had made his efforts without reward.

The pupils completing the seventh grade and thus made ready for high school work are Ira Whitmire, Christine Whitmire, Frank Fenwick, Homer Corn and Leota Corn.

The teachers for the session were C.E. Ellenburg, principal, Miss Janie Gillespie, intermediate, and Miss Myrtle Garren, primary department.
