Mason Wingate Suspected of Taking Money From Cash Register, Jan. 8, 1924

Bootblack in Jail After $70 Robbery. . . Till of Bud’s Place Looted of Cash During Church Hour Sunday Afternoon

Mason Wingate, colored, is lodged in jail awaiting a trial on a charge of larceny of between $60 and $70 from the cash registers of Bud’s Place.

Wingate is a bootblack at the store and was in the building at 6:15 o’clock yesterday evening when it closed for the church hour. When he left Mr. Leon Edwards, a clerk in the store, told him to close and lock the back door. The negro went out saying that he was going to Goldsboro. After the church hour Mr. Edwards opened the store and found considerable money missing from the cash register and also the back door unlocked.

The negro returned to his work this morning was accused of taking the money and the police were notified and he was placed under arrest. Officer Smithy made the arrest and placed the negro in jail.

When questioned by a representative of The Times the negro denied knowing anything about the missing money, but stated that he locked the back door on his way out and didn’t return. He is in jail awaiting trial before Mayor Silas Lucas in Mayor’s Court.
