Aaron McKeever in Jail, Suspected of Stealing Clothing, Jan. 8, 1924

Took $350 Worth Clothing

Aaron McKeever, colored, was arrested and lodged in jail at a late hour last night by Officers Jesse Hamilton and J.J. Baines on a charge of larceny of clothing valued at $350.

McKeever was arrested at a house on Smith street, at which time he had in his possession 12 suits of boys’ clothing, 15 women’s dresses, a fur cloak and several pairs of silk hose. Five other negroes and a negress were in the house at the time of the arrest. McKeever had been selling some of the clothing on the street and the officers had been shadowing him.

McKeever claimed he had hidden some of the stolen goods in a patch of woods near New Grab Neck, about a mile and a half from Welson. Officers Hamilton and Baines made a thorough investigation of the woods but failed to recover any of the goods supposed to have been hidden there.

The officers have been unable to locate the owners of the stolen property, but it is thought that the goods belonged to merchants in Selma, as the local authorities have been notified that three stores in that town had been broken into and goods stolen in the past week.

Officers Hamilton and Baines have been unable to locate anyone who purchased the stolen property, and McKeever isn’t talking so the authorities have no clues upon which to work, but nevertheless they are making a thorough investigation of the affair. McKeever will be given a hearing before Mayor Silas Lucas in a day or so.
