Justice of Peace Accused of Accepting Money Under Color of Office, April 1, 1924

Indictment for Wilmington Man. . . John J. Furlong Charged with Malfeasance as Justice of Peace; Case Set for Trial Next Term of Court

Wilmington, March 27—Indictments charging malfeasance in office and failure to make reports to the auditor have been returned by the county grand jury against John J. Furlong, justice of the peace, and one of the best known men in the city. Bond is being arranged; it was said yesterday. The cases will probably come up for trial at the next term of criminal court, which will be convened in May, and which will be presided over by Judge Thomas H. Calvert.

In the bill of indictment charging malfeasance, in office Justice Furlong is alleged to have accepted money under color of is office and failed to account for it. He is one of the best known men in the city and at one time was regarded as a political power in the community. Prior to opening an office as justice of the peace, he had served as recorder, deputy recorder, chief of police and superintendent of street.
