Dudley Hunt Commits Suicide, July 7, 1924

Dudley Hunt Commits Suicide at Home Near Back Swamp. . . Indian Uses Shot Gun on Self with Deadly Effect—Threw Trigger with a Stick—Had Told Wife That he Was going to Kill Himself. . . No Inquest Necessary

Dudley Hunt, Indian, about 60 years old, committed suicide Saturday afternoon about 3 o’clock at his home 7 miles west of Lumberton using a breach-loading shot gun thought to have been loaded with No. 6 shot.

By the use of a stick and something to tie the gun, he managed to throw the trigger while the barrel of the gun was only a few inches from his heart. The load literally tore a whole through his body.

His home is situated on Lumber river, not far from the Back Swamp church, and it was in the yard that the shooting took place. His wife and an Indian named Jones were in the house at the time. Hunt had told them that he was going to kill himself, but they did not attach any importance to his threat until they heard the gun discharge.

No inquest was held, as Sheriff R.E. Lewis and several citizens went to the scene and found that there was no sign of foul play, but a clear case of suicide.
