Barnes, Wilkinson, Cutlip, Venerable Charged with Operating Still on Battleship, Dec. 14, 1925

Still Discovered on Battleship

Norfolk, Va.—Three non-commissioned officers and one mess attendant attached to the battleship Texas, now at the Norfolk navy yard, are under arrest and have been recommended for general court martial by the commanding officer on charges of operating a still on board the ship.

They are W.A. Barnes and H.M. Wilkinson, both electrician’s mate, first class; R.A. Cutlip, machinists mate, second class; and S. Venerable, a mess attendant.

All are charged officially with conduct to the prejudice of good order and discipline.

Specifications allege that on December 1, Lieutenant A.L. Broughton, the ship’s electrical officer, found the apparatus for manufacturing intoxicating liquors in operation in dynamo room number 1, in the lower part of the vessel, forward. One or two of the men were under the influence of liquor at the time.
