County Commissioners to Choose Municipal Power and Light Source, June 3, 1921

Electric Power Program Before Commissioners

Final decision as to which of the several electric power proposals the Town of Dunn will select will be made when the Board of Town Commissioners meet in special session some time next week. Gilbert C. White, engineer, employed by the town to determine the value of the present equipment owned by the town and to pass upon the feasibility of the McQueen hydro-electric project on Little River. Two of the proposals are looked upon with favor by the board. One is that made by the Carolina Power and Light Company. This company proposes to purchase the plant owned by the town and supply current direct to the consumers at a rate much below that now charged by the town. The other is that made by the McQueen’s offer to sell the town current at wholesale much cheaper than the price it ow pays to generate its own power.

Acceptance of either proposal, however, will necessitate the issuance of at least $100,000 of town bonds. The money derived from the sale of these bonds would be loaned the company whose proposal is accepted to aid it in bringing its lines to Dunn. The sum would be retired in 10 equal annual installments.

Operation of the municipal light and power plant has never been a profitable undertaking for the community. In addition to the heavy cost of current, patrons have suffered much from the numerous cessations of service occasioned by coal shortage, decrepit machinery and worn out equipment. Every patron of the plant would welcome any kind of a change. It is certain that no change can be for the worst.
