On May 9th we had the pleasure of enjoying the celebration of the 100th birthday of one of the oldest ladies in this town, namely Sister Helen Waddell, who is an active and consistent member of Old Mt. Zion A.M.E. Zion Church of which our good pastor, Rev. A.E. Hudson is in charge. The meeting opened with singing and prayer, after which the pastor called on the writer to pray. The pastor then made some very brief remarks concerning God’s blessings. He ended promptly at 8 o’clock. The party ten showered her with several dollars and pounds of provisions.
It suffices us to say that Sister Waddell still retains her memory. She arose to her feet and worded out an old familiar hymn, “And are we yet alive and see each other’s face.” There were both young and old that came to pay graceful tribute of respect to Sister Waddell. She appears to be very active and vigorous.
Thus we closed out with a hearty old-fashioned hand shake. The writer was asked to sing “When the Saints come marching home.” With the Holy Spirit burning in our hearts, we adjourned.
