Bloodhounds Hunt Man Who Assaulted 19-Year-Old Elon College Student, Jan. 4, 1924

Hounds Hunt Man Who Tried Attack on College Woman. . . Elon Senior Assaulted on the Campus by Man for Whom the Police Are Looking

Greensboro, Jan. 2—The hunt for the assailant of a 19-year-old senior at Elon College, east of here, who was attacked on the college campus Tuesday evening about 7 o’clock, continues today with bloodhounds from Asheville doing the tracing. Ed Clodfelter, white, arrested at Gibsonville a short while after the attempted attack, is still being held in jail here, but indications this morning are less positive that he is the man wanted.

Clodfelter contents he is a resident of Greensboro and that he went to Gibsonville Tuesday to seek a job in one of the mills there. He was taken in custody by a deputy sheriff and brought here for safe keeping.

Bloodhounds were secured late Tuesday and put on the track. The dogs picked up a scent which led in an opposite direction from Gibsonville. At 3 o’clock the chase was abandoned because of the downfall of rain and snow. The pursuit is being pushed today, according to word received here by officials.

The student had gone to the post office and was returning when the attempted assault was made. The young woman declares she was thrown to the ground and was told that if she screamed she would be shot. She finally got loose and went to her home, where she fainted as she entered. The violence of the attack was shown by the condition of Miss Lowe’s clothes. The assailant, however, did not succeed in his purpose.

The young woman declares the man wore a mask of some sort, and stepped out and grabbed her as she was passing a construction shack used by the forces erecting new college buildings.
