Southern Pines, Nov. 15—The Southern Pines Hotel, a winter hotel, was threatened with destruction tonight when fire broke out in the basement. The blaze was brought under control the by the combined efforts of the Southern Pines, Aberdeen and Pinehurst fire departments.
The extent of the damage, much of it due to water and smoke, had not been estimated today, but it was said to be heavy. The hotel recently was purchased by J.J. Harrington, New Hampshire hotel man. The loss is said to have been covered by insurance.
