Davidson, Sept. 19—Elon’s hopes for an initial victory over the Wildcats went smashing for another year when the Davidson eleven tore through the Christians for a 34 to 0 victory today. The game, played under a broiling sun that would have sent heavier squads to the showers, was the first of the 1925 football season in North Carolina. Although the Wildcats had been predicted as the winter of the initial fray, the Elon team had been played up as Elon’s best bet against Davidson and the terrific pounding that Coach Younger’s machine handed the visitors was little expected.
Davidson paid dearly for the victory. Nick Sappenfield, brilliant quarter of last season, broke his leg after he had twisted through the Elon line, the break coming as he was tackled and fell. Sappenfield had his team going at a fast pace and was just entering the sacred 10-yard zone for the third time when the accident occurred. The loss of Sappenfield is a great one.
