Tom Perry In Jail Waiting for Moore County Folk to See He's the Wrong Man, Sept. 21, 1925

Mistaken Identity Proves Unpleasant

Burlington, Sept. 18—Being the double of another man, a murderer, is not a pleasant experience during the time it is necessary to wait for identification, if Tom Perry, negro, knew what he was talking about.

Toim’s appearance tallied with a negro wanted in Moore county for the alleged killing of another negro, and he was picked up here yesterday by Curie Murrie and on advice of the Moore county sheriff held several hours for identification.

A crippled left leg, lame from a stroke, and other physical features caused him to be picked up. He admitted that he had been in Moore county and had read about the alleged killing in the papers, but more than that he knew noting, declaring “dey don’t know me; I don’t know dem.”

The negro resigned himself to wait, concluding as he was being escorted to the “coop” that he was not the man, but reckoned it best to let the Moore county officers see him.
