Shore Hotel
This quaint old hostelery was erected years ago by “Judge” Phillips, one of the pioneer citizens of the county. It was conducted by him and his people for many years, passing into the hands of ex-sheriff Isaac Shore 19 years ago. The hotel has been the scene of many stirring gatherings in the old days when many of the prominent men of the state gathered there for one purpose or another. Some of the prominent men of the state who have rested for days in the hotel were Judge Cloud, Rom Linney, Gov. R. B. Glenn and Attorney “Bill” Glenn, Cyrus B. Watson and Attorney Buxton, Thomas Settle, Nick Williams and many other men prominent in the history of North Carolina. With its large rooms and spacious halls, the hotel has also been the scene of many gay parties, in the old days when ladies and gentlemen gathered around the festive bowl and spent the night in dancing and merrymaking until dawn, with supper and coffee at midnight. There was always plenty of pure whiskeys and wines, but seldom did anybody ever become intoxicated. Those were the good old days before reformers started out to reform a world that did not need it as much as now.
