Items of Local News

--Stewards meeting at Chestnut Street Methodist church at 7:30 this evening.

--Tomorrow is the last day to pay your light and water bills before a dollar extra will be charged.

--Mrs. J.A. Martin and son, Master Raymond, are expected home Wednesday from Richmond, Va., where they went a week ago with Dr. Martin and the other son, Master Abbie, who returned last week on account of the death of Mrs. Martin’s father.

--W.J. Hooper and D.A. Sammons, colored, returned Friday from Terrell, Pa., where they spent three months doing carpentry work. They say they found plenty of work at good wages but prefer to stay in Lumberton, their home town, when they can get employment here.

--Mrs. J.L. Stephens had as her guests for the week-end Mrs. B.F. Wade and young son, Master Frank, of Barnesville, and as dinner guests Friday evening Mrs. Wade and son, and Misses English Wade and Sarah Watson of the McDonald school faculty and Mr. Neill Hall of McDonald.

--Mr. Fitzhugh Whitfield of Clinton, probable candidate for Lieutenant-Governor at the next general election, passed through Lumberton this morning for Red Springs, where he spent the day on legal business. Mr. Whitfield is a prominent attorney of Sampson county.

--Rev. T. McM. Grant, pastor of Chestnut Street Methodist church, Mrs. Grant and daughter Little Miss Ruby returned the last of last week from Kinston, where they visited relatives. Miss Ruby has recovered from her recent severe attack of flu. Mr. Grant also spent several days at Currituck Sound duck hunting, as mentioned elsewhere in this issue.

--Dr. Graham McLean, dentist, who has made his home in Fairmont for the past several years, will move Wednesday to Lumberton and will be located in the Planters building. Dr. McLean is a graduate of Atlanta Dental College, and has enjoyed a nice practice in Fairmont. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Surgeon McLean of McDonald.

--Reported for The Robesonian: Mr. G.B. Wishart and daughter, Miss Grace Wishart, and sisters, Miss Ophelia Watson, Mrs. F.D. Hamilton and nieces, Mrs. C.a. Warwick and children, C.A. Jr. and Edna Louise of Wilmington, spent Thursday in Raleigh, where they visited their sister, Miss Willie Wishart who is in a hospital there. They made the trip in Miss Watson’s Oakland six.

--Rev. T. McM. Grant, Messrs. L.C. Townsend, G.B. Kirkman, E.L. and Johnnie D. McNeill and W.W. Davis returned Thursday night from Currituck Sound, where they spent several days duck hunting. Messrs. L.W. Wicker, J.L. Stephens, G.M. Tucker and M.A. Geddie of Lumberton, Mr. Marshall French of Rockingham and Mr. Hill of Charlotte are now at the sound enjoying the same sport. The crowd returning Thursday night brought 150 ducks with them.

--Mr. and Mrs. H.H. Abbott returned yesterday from Charlotte where they spent several days with their son, Mr. W.G. Abbott of Mt. Holly, who was seriously injured in an automobile accident last Tuesday night near Charlotte, as stated in Thursday’s Robesonian. They report that their son, who is in the Charlotte sanatorium, is getting along as well as could be expected, though it will be several days before he will be able to go home. Mr. and Mrs. C.T. Bullock of Lake View, S.C., son-in-law and daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E.H. Abbott, drove to Charlotte Saturday to see Mrs. Bullock’s brother and passed through here last night on their way home.

--The Mansfield Club of East Lumberton gave an elegant oyster and turkey stage dinner at Mansfield Inn at 6 p.m. Saturday. Several young ladies of families of members served and in turn were served by several members. Officers have not yet been elected but this is the second feed of the club, which was projected two weeks ago and will be organized among superintendents, room overseers and other officials of the Mansfield mines for the purpose of promoting good fellowship and discussing their mutual problems. Several from the Jennings mills and a few outsiders were invited guests and enjoyed the occasion with those who will be members of the club.
