Man Passed Bad Checks at Local Businesses, 1919

From the Lincoln Times, as reprinted in The Eagle, Cherryville, N.C., August 7, 1919

Four local business houses showed absolute confidence in their fellow man Saturday and as a result their bank deposits Monday morning were a trifle lighter.

Representing himself as a local citizen and using the names of several well-known Lincoln County citizens, the light-fingered artist who passed the bogus checks had no trouble in convincing local merchants that those he had to cash were perfectly all right, and but for the fact that the ball game had interfered with his plans, they would have been cashed at the local banks during the afternoon.

The story which seemed perfectly plausible took well and as a result the stranger carried away about $50 in cash of our now wiser merchants.

The incident has been reported to the local authorities and from descriptions given it is expected that the guilty man will be apprehended.
