You’ve probably appreciated the work of the men of the
Civilian Conservation Corps even if you didn’t realize who had done the work.
The men worked on Blue Ridge Parkway tunnels, the Cape Hatteras Light House,
Fort Macon State Park, Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Hanging Rock State
Park, Jones Lake State Park, Mount Mitchell State Park, Singletary Lake State
Park, South Mountains State Park, and William B. Umstead State Park.
The CCC had 66 camps in North Carolina, employing nearly
14,000 men. For a list of Civilian Conservation Corps projects in North
Carolina, see http://ccclegacy.org/CCC_Camps_North_Carolina.html

Dr. Harley Jolley, retired Mars Hill College history
professor, wrote That Magnificent Army of
Youth and Peace: The Civilian Conservation Corps in North Carolina, 1933-1942.
